Recent Cold Weather and Freeze Damage

We think it is pertinent to address the cold weather we have already experienced this winter. While the temperatures we have seen are not abnormally low, what is unusual is the length of the cold snap that we had from Jan. 2-11. Meteorologist Rob Marciano said that “Typically across the South, you’ll get a two- to three-day cold snap, and then temperatures will moderate, but we’re getting reinforcing shot after reinforcing shot”. In fact, several areas came close to breaking records. Our purpose in bringing this to your attention is to address the impact on the landscape.

Currently, we are seeing freeze damage on many plants that are usually very hardy. While these burnt leaves may be unattractive, it may be safer for some plants to leave them on in order to insulate the plant and prevent further damage when more freezing temperatures arrive. Your supervisor is making this determination depending on your home’s location, extent of damage to the plant and positioning of individual plants. While much damage is visible now, even more may be identified in the spring when plants start to flush out.

Turf and lawns are not immune to these extreme temperatures. While damage is not easily visible while the grass is dormant, it may have occurred. Grass blades are equally susceptible to extended periods of frost damage. This damage will express itself in the spring when green-up occurs and may be more pronounced in exposed and previously weak areas. We may find areas that come out of dormancy thin and weak or possibly patches that are completely desiccated.

We are currently checking and monitoring your landscape closely to identify and address any visible damage. As any further damage expresses itself as we near spring, we will contact you to discuss possible solutions.
