CLAY RICE AT THE GREENERY

The Greenery, Inc. – Monday, May 20, 2013

Save the date and book your appointment now for the rare opportunity to have you or your child’s silhouette portrait crafted by award-winning, South Carolina artist and children’s book author, Clay Rice (www.ricegalleries.com). Rice will be available for bookings from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 8 at The Greenery’s Antiques and Garden Collectibles Shop (https://thegreeneryinc.com/gifts-and-antiques), 960 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head Island.

Silhouette artistry and storytelling is a Rice family tradition spanning three generations and two artists, including Clay’s grandfather, Carew Rice (http://www.ricegalleries.com/bio.html).  Clay Rice uses his scissors to create a silhouette portrait in a matter of moments and estimates he’s created more than 900,000 silhouettes in his 32-year career.

Silhouette cutting (http://www.ricegalleries.com/silhouetteartform.html) began in France in the mid-1700s. Silhouettes remain popular for their simplicity, charm and dramatic, artistic quality.

“There is an innocence there,” Rice says. “A silhouette forces you to use your imagination … yet still evokes emotion just like any other work of art.”

You can book your appointment in advance or walk-in to experience the artist at work. At 2 p.m., Rice will perform a special reading and musical performance from his children’s books (http://www.ricegalleries.com/gallery-books.html). His books, “The Lonely Shadow” and “Mama Let’s Make a Moon” were written and illustrated by Rice and will be available at the Garden Shop for purchase.

Packages for silhouette portraits begin at $42.  There will also be packages available that include his books and matting or mounting of the portraits.
