Celebrating the Women of The Greenery, Inc. During Women’s History Month
Wednesday, March 26, 2025 | The Greenery, Inc.
At The Greenery, Inc., we are proud to honor and celebrate the incredible women who have played an essential role in shaping our company and the landscaping industry at large for 52 years. This Women’s History Month, we take a moment to highlight the powerful women who bring creativity, expertise, and leadership to every aspect of our work.

The landscaping industry in the United States is made up of around 1 million individuals, yet women represent a only around 8-10% workforce. At The Greenery, Inc., we are proud to have more than 70 women contributing their skills and knowledge across various departments daily. Women are making a difference throughout The Greenery, Inc. at all levels in our corporation from horticulturalists, in-the-field landscape services, business development, administration and executive level leadership. These women not only bring their passion for nature and design but also create lasting impacts on their teams and the clients they serve.
Here are just a few voices from The Greenery, Inc. that reflect the unique and empowering experiences of women in this ever-evolving field:

Deirdre Froelich, Business Developer
Deidre has flourished in her role as Business Developer at The Greenery, Inc. She loves being involved and representing The Greenery, Inc. in various community events across her territory in Savannah, Georgia. Not only is she giving back to the community, but Deirdre is also building lasting connections with clients and other colleagues in the green industry.
“Being a woman in the landscape industry has taught me that success is rooted in determination and collaboration,” share Dee. “At The Greenery, Inc., we thrive by embracing innovation and cultivating strong relationships. This Women’s History Month, I celebrate the women who inspire progress, break barriers, and help our industry grow, one project at a time. I’m proud to work alongside so many incredible women at The Greenery!”

Holly Haakerson, CRM on Hilton Head Island
Holly’s journey with The Greenery, Inc. is a beautiful example of how the landscaping industry can empower women to grow professionally. “This position has been evolving since the day I started,” Holly says. “I have been given the opportunity and freedom to make it an incredible career. Not only does this position enable creativity and growth as a horticulturist, but it also opens up conversations with locals, inviting empowerment and responsibility. I treat each client as if they were my own neighbor asking a friend for guidance.”
For Holly, being a woman in the green industry is about more than just plants – it’s about building connections and embracing nature’s evolving beauty. “Being a woman in the Green industry means I get to embrace my creativity, embellish my love for nature, and build relationships with strangers every day. Some projects begin with a glass of iced tea on the back deck, others with a casual conversation on the porch swing or a walk around a 40-year-old property that holds more memories than the heart can measure. Sometimes I must remind myself, this is not my vision. It’s someone’s home, vacation getaway, or a family’s estate for generations.”

Andrea Van Dijk, Accountant Manager
Andrea Van Dijk’s story is a testament to the long-term growth opportunities at The Greenery. Starting her career almost 20 years ago in the Garden Center, Andrea’s dedication and hard work have led her to her current role as Accountant Manager. “I have learned that dedication, hard work, and loyalty provide opportunities to succeed within our company. The Greenery wants to see people grow!”
Andrea’s journey is a reminder of the importance of hard work, talent and perseverance, and how those values can provide promotion and career success.

Stacy Kraus, Business Developer
Stacy, who has found her place as a Business Developer at The Greenery, Inc. shares her experience as a woman in a male-dominated industry. “As a woman working in a predominantly male industry, I have found my time at The Greenery to be very supportive and welcoming. I am surrounded by great teammates and leaders every day. We are all working as one – ‘speaking the same language.’ The Greenery definitely supports my drive and willingness to grow – which is so important in my career!”
Stacy’s admiration for the supportive culture at The Greenery shines through in her words about her manager, Melissa Brock: “If you know me, you know I believe The Greenery is the best company I’ve ever worked for – and my boss, Melissa Brock, is the best manager I’ve ever worked with! It truly inspires me to be supported by Melissa and other great women on my team, and throughout our company!”

Melissa Brock, Director of Business Development
Melissa Brock, who leads our Business Development team, reflects on how her role at The Greenery has shaped her career. “I have learned that a ‘job’ can be a career path. The Greenery has been very supportive in my professional growth, not only in the landscape industry but also in serving our community.”
As a leader in the company, Melissa’s commitment to supporting the team and encouraging professional growth is an inspiration to many. She embodies what it means to lead with empathy and vision.
Ruthie Edwards, the First Lady of The Greenery, Inc.
Ruthie Edwards is a visionary who transformed both her community and the landscape industry on Hilton Head Island. In the early 1970s, Ruthie, alongside her husband Berry, moved their family to the island and began their journey with a landscaping business that grew into one of the most respected companies in the southeast – The Greenery, Inc.

But Ruthie’s impact extends beyond business. In 1973, while driving through South Carolina, she discovered a historic church for sale in Ridgeland. Despite its decaying state, Ruthie saw its potential and was captivated by its rich history. She and her family purchased and relocated the church to Hilton Head (no small feat!) where it would serve as the foundation of their growing business. Thanks to Ruthie’s perseverance, this act of preservation ensured that the church’s 142-year-old story lived on.
Through Ruthie’s determination, the church found a new life, becoming The Greenery’s Antiques & Garden Collectibles Shop, where visitors today are still drawn to its tranquil, historic charm.
Ruthie’s legacy is not only in the success she built but in her commitment to preserving the past, honoring history, and creating something lasting for future generations.
